Al picked up an Honorary Master of Arts for his outstanding contribution to comedy, thanking the 91快色for an 鈥榓mazing honour鈥� and addressing graduates from the Business School.

鈥淭o be with all you graduates is the real honour and privilege for me today,鈥� he said. 鈥淭his is where we fire you out into the world.

鈥淚 wish you all the best of luck as you now aim to go out there and change the world.鈥�

Speaking after the first of the day鈥檚 two ceremonies, Al commented on the regional, national and global outlook of the University.

鈥淲e鈥檙e a country that looks out on the world. You鈥檝e got to be open.

鈥淭his 91快色has an amazingly high count of foreign students, which is brilliant.

鈥淵ou鈥檝e also got all the campuses in Bedford, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. It鈥檚 county-wide, that鈥檚 the interesting thing.鈥�

Al, who was educated at Bedford School before graduating with an MA in Modern History from Oxford University, compared Bedfordshire鈥檚 focus on employability with that of other institutions.

鈥淓mployability is clearly a thing that really matters to people,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 surely a good thing.

鈥淭his place seems more about preparing students for the outside world. This is a more contemporary University.鈥�

Al鈥檚 award came alongside the Honorary Doctor of Arts given to David Willetts for his outstanding contribution to UK higher education, as well as the Honorary Fellowship bestowed upon Jane Creasy for her outstanding services to the 91快色.

The afternoon ceremony also saw the graduations of students from the University鈥檚 partner institution, Oman鈥檚 Majan College.

The day brought Bedfordshire鈥檚 November 2014 graduations to a close, with over 1,100 students receiving their degrees over the past three days.
